Northern pin oak is a common tree in many woodlands and savannas on dry, sandy, acid, sterile soil. It is relatively fast-growing (for an oak), and long-lived. It has brilliant red fall foliage, and often holds its leaves through winter. It needs direct sunlight, so plant it in an open spot.
